Slow fashion is mindful of the time required by both nature and people for their processes.
We are immersed in a culture of consumerism that promotes instant gratification from impulses, favouring what’s ephemeral and disposable. A voracious demand for what is new puts pressure on manufacturing processes and accelerates its speed, and this is inevitably damaging our planet and ourselves.
At CALMO, our times are not defined by seasons, but by processes needed to accomplish carefully handmade products. Our philosophy calls for reflection, consciousness. We aim to bring profoundness back to design, to convey a message that goes beyond what meets the eye or graces the hand.
We work with local artisans specialised in different areas such as natural dyeing, wool felting, hand printing and carpentry. 90% of our workforce is female.
Their work is flexible and formalized, and we support them by providing a stable, fair income in exchange for their work. We believe in empowering our workers and aim to bring attention to forgotten skills that make for such a large part of our unique heritage.
SKILLED, LOCAL AND FORMAL WORKFORCE
We are a female-founded brand led by and created for women, so female artisans hold a special place in our hearts.
Often underpaid yet overstretched with family responsibility, women can hold a place of disadvantage in the fashion industry. We actively work to ensure our female workers have the flexibility to work from home, in order to balance their work with family life and provide financial security for their loved ones.
Our designs are born from the love of nature and its goodness. As such, we work with natural materials and choose methods that keep sustainability at their core, such as the use of natural dyes derived from leaves and flowers, the artisanal textile techniques that consume less energy, or producing locally, which reduces our carbon footprint.
Finding the most effective way of using what nature has to offer, affecting its balance as little as possible is our ultimate goal.
We use ethically sourced natural fibres like fine Merino wool, pure silk and linen. We focus on finding the best material for each product, exploring ways of making the most of its innate properties to ensure a perfect match between fibre and style. We believe carefully treated textiles are the key to lasting pieces.
URUGUAYAN MERINO WOOL
We exclusively use Uruguayan Fine Merino wool in our collections, which is ethically produced by local families who have been passing the skill down from generation to generation. By choosing our local wool we are supporting this national industry as well as the modernisation of the skill, together with the relevancy of its workers. Our local raising and shearing methods are in line with international ethical standards, and our wool is RWS certified. There is no harming or manhandling of animals in our sourcing process.
We actively promote responsible production and consumption, to ensure our footprint is as little as possible, and that we support the people we work with. The smallest effort can turn into a big change if done by all. So we strongly believe in doing everything we can to guarantee our intention is strong and the life of our natural resources is extended with every piece sold.
We believe that a well-made product should last a lifetime. So we make ours that way.
We choose noble materials and talented artisans to shape them. On each of our products you will find the name of the artisan who made it along with a description of the textiles and dyeing method used. So you know exactly what you are taking home.
REVALUATION OF CRAFTS
We seek to rediscover nearly forgotten crafts and give them a place of relevance in today’s ethical fashion market. By working closely with our artisans, we collaborate to create unique pieces that blend the best of tradition with a modern eye. We covet soulful products that tell a story and are able to stand the test of time.
Our unique styles are the result of a constant search for identity. We remain separate from seasonal trends and design from our very own experience, culture and brand values. We believe in garments and home pieces you can keep and treasure regardless of seasonal colour schemes or passing trends.
MINIMAL TEXTILE WASTE
We know 15% of all textiles end up as waste on workshops floors, rivers and landfills around the globe, and we are determined to ensure ours do not.
We follow a zero waste policy when designing and placing patterns on our fabrics, making sure our tetris-like geometrical shapes use up the entire surface of the textile. We are also committed to creating products conceived to outlive us. A consciously made and well looked after garment with a timeless design doesn’t end up in landfill, and that is what we aim for.
The way you receive our product is as important to us as the item itself. We take every care to produce our packaging as sustainably as the rest of our collection, using durable materials like Uruguayan eucalyptus wood, cotton and water based dyes. Our fabric bags and wooden boxes are designed to be reused at home.
